What is Climbing in Color?
We are a community created by and for People of Color (POC) whose goal is to build a community of camaraderie and support for People of Color in the climbing community. Based in Tucson and Flagstaff, we conduct events, meetups, and programs for climbers who self-identify as POC and we aim to introduce more POC to the sport. Open to all ages and abilities and genders, allies welcome.

What happens at People of Color Climb Nights?
Mostly we just hang out and climb, but at the beginning we do some quick intros and an icebreaker, announce upcoming events, and take a group photo. If it is your first time, you’ll get orientation and safety training. After that it’s mostly climbing, chilling, and encouraging everyone on the walls! Often a group will decide to go out for food/drink after, as well.
-
Who are climb nights for?
CIC meetups are primarily for anyone who self-identifies as a person of color. Open to all ages, abilities, genders and sexual orientations. Allies are welcome.
-
Do Climb Night meetups cost anything?
Unless the event post indicates otherwise, all our meetups are FREE FOR GYM MEMBERS while non-members pay for a gym day pass and rental equipment at a discounted rate. We do have climb night passes available. Please email us if you would like financial assistance.
-
How much is a gym day pass and rentals?
Each gym has their own pricing and some even offer discounted passes for our group. Check the event posting on climbingincolor.org or on our IG @climbingincolor for details or contact us with questions.
-
What if I want to attend a climb night but can't afford it?
At most gyms that host us, we have “scholarship passes” available on request. Send us a DM on IG or email us ahead of the meetup date if you’d like to use one! Please reach out to us on our contact form, or on our Instagram @climbingincolor.

I am an ally and my friend or family member identifies as a person of color. Can I tag along? Am I allowed to climb with the group?
Yes! Allies are welcome. By attending, you are taking on the responsibility of being an ally and we expect you to act as such. Feel free to refer to our ‘how to be an ally’ page for tips and resources. We welcome your participation and appreciate that you are committed to helping us maintain a safe and welcoming space for people of color.
-
What does a safe space for people of color mean? What are your group guidelines?
We believe in supporting each other and maintaining a positive climbing atmosphere. At our meetups, all ages, abilities and genders are welcome. Allies are welcome too. This means we cheer each other on, we are not competitive, we ask people if they would like to be coached before we offer advice, we check each other and pay attention to the orientation training for the safety of everyone, we honor individual sovereignty and we climb together.
